Rest day.

10 maart 2024 - Cape St Francis, Zuid-Afrika

This morning after the coffee Ingrid and Justin took doggy for a walk. I decided not to go as my toe although not constantly hurting anymore needed to rest. Yesterday I walked on the beach a bit too much and she flared up a bit. Rest day!

Soon after the 3 of them came back I made breakfast for us and Justin decided to pack up and go home again. He had wanted to spearfish, but the tide would only be right late afternoon and driving home in the dark is no fun here in South Africa.

He packed his bags and soon they were on the road. Ingrid and I did a sort of "wisseldag". While she was busy with things, I got my hands dirty and washed the pots and packed the dishwasher. Soon after that I took the vacuum cleaner for some exercise. It was fun to have something worthwhile to do. We both pretty much finished our chores at the same time and had to have a coffee break (Not like we were going back to work- Heehee).

We had decided to kind of eat what is leftover in the fridge tonight, so a trip to the supermarket was not going to be necessary. I guess that you can not call us lazy as such, but we just do not have much to do so we just lazed! Ingrid insisted that I try to keep off the foot so that I can maximise the healing process. It has been a weekend to remember weather wise and we took full advantage of the shade and every so light breeze as we sat on the deck or lay on the couch with the doors wide open. Jackpot has these lovely sliding folding doors where on can open the wholeside of the house and sort of stacks the door panels to one side. Genius!

Nothing to do and all day to do it in. I am still amazed as to the fact that I can do nothing and not be bored. Maybe that is yet to come. We do not idly sit on the couch and do diddly squat, but there is little that "needs" to be done. In the early afternoon I suggested that we head out for a cuppa brew just to get out of the house. An afternoon beach session was still on the agenda for later.

I felt like some of the carrot cake that we had last week (To share), but when we asked if they had the cake, we were told that it was all sold out. We could get a slice of banana cake if we wanted. No thank you. Carrot cake or bust! We left to go to the other coffee shop and try our luck. If they also could not deliver, then sorry for me.

No carrot cake at the lighthouse either, so we settled for that cuppa brew. I had been told by Ingrid that if they also did not have the cake, she was going to have coffee. We were not on a quest to get a slice of that cake. Yes dear! Coffee for two and we again just sat and enjoyed the views and weather and sipped on our coffee. Ingrid did have a healthy breakfast to tide her over. She had of course been on a bit of a walk this morning, half of which was over the sand which is not very easy to walk on. I felt like I could stay there all day. Perfect temperature, perfect setting. Perfect. We were also entertained by a couple of small kids in their costumes squealing and laughing and having the time of their lives running under and through the sprinklers.

We had finished that dreaded frightful Lion puzzle yesterday thanks to the trained professional Justin and Ingrid. Today we started on the next one. This is going to be fun this time. That last one was a menace! Ingrid can sit for hours and puzzle away. She is talented. I admire her patience. Another hour disappeared off the clock and we were up to afternooner time. Did we waste a day? No! We enjoyed our morning, we just have nothing to show for it, but a clean house.

I spoke with my old friend from school who lives in Ireland for the good part of an hour this afternoon. We connect every 5 or so years and have a good catch up. They are doing well and our blog/mini sabattical has perhaps made him more conscious of decisions that he/they want to make, but just have not done it. There are 2 sides to the coin. On the one hand the timing might not be right. I always say that once the seed has been planted it can take days, weeks, months or even years for the timing to be right and then everything will fall into place or it will happen.

On the other hand, if you do not set a date for something, days, weeks, months or sometimes years will pass before you actually set that date and go for the goal. We have rolled the dice and set our date and are thankful that we have done this. One day we can not look back and pinch ourselves for not having done it sooner. One way or the other we will return to Holland in May and know more than we knew a few months ago.

Late afternoon is certainly the time to go to the beach if the weather is good. We just lay on our towels and watched the comings and goings. People with dogs, dogs with dogs, people with people. Surfers in the water and surfers out of the water. The chokka boats (Calamari fishing boats) on the water and an occassional container ship that passed along the horizon. It was not surf for boogie boarding as the waves were literally crashing on the shoreline so one could not ride or surf them. I did have my swim though and Ingrid reamined on the beach for today. Once again it was difficult to pull ourselves away from the scene, but it was home time.

Dinner was served and we watched an episode of Gold Rush. It is easy TV to watch and it is interesting to think that someone brings in say $1 million plus in a week. Even $250 000/week sounds quite good to me. I know that there are variables and costs etc, but it is crazy that some outfits bring in $250 000 and they barely cover costs, wheres as we bring in a smidgeon of that and we also cover costs. It is all relative.

Another day done and another day wiser and older.
