Lovely day

20 februari 2024 - Cape St Francis, Zuid-Afrika

Tadaaa!!!! A wonderful nights sleep for both of us. I guess we are getting used to the creaking roof. Score! Ingrid was up in the night and I thought, that can't be right as she was in the drawer looking for a pill. I found out later that it was a Migraine pill that she took. I was out of bed at the usual time and left Ingrid to sleep it off. She arouse about an hour later and said that she was not 100's.

Our plan was to drive to Oyster Bay, about a 15 minute drive, to do the Oyster Bay Penninsula walk. As Ingrid was not 100's and one needs to get out early to avoid the heat of the late morning, we decided to give it a skip and postpone to a later date. Instead we jumped in the car and drove to St Francis Bay to do some grocery shopping and get some bread from Baker Barry. Fresh and still steaming hot. We knew what was coming!!! Fresh bread with butter!!! I was like a little child and could not wait to get home. At the supermarket we had decided on dinner so that went home with us. We also needed some water desperately, so a 10 litre bottle went home as well. Aside, we seem to drink a lot more water here.

Boy, was that bread lekkerrrrr!!! A little proper honey on a slice (or two). How simple can some things be! Surprise, surprise, Ingrid asked me if I wanted to go for a swim. It was an offer I can not refuse. My wife wanting to swim in the sea. YAY! We went down to the newly named Kingy's beach in front of Jackpot. There are two places where one can swim (dobber) a bit and we went for option 1, but the current underfoot was very strong. We got soaking wet and again that smile of wife face was so worth seeing!

We did not stay in long and after getting back to our towels I suggested that we try option 2. We have all day and it was only 9am and the walk was probably 100 meters. This was a good call. The current was a lot less strong and she even tried her freestyle stroke with her head in the water. Smile. Smile. Smile!

Back home we lazed a little and before long Ingrid was asleep on the couch. I guess to catch up after the migraine had slapped her. She looked so cute on the couch with her book on her tummy. I headed upstairs to face creaky, but I was also gone in 60 seconds. When we awoke we drank tea. Mint and ginger for me. I like it!

What do you want to do? No, what do you want to do? "I want to look for some cooking oil", she said. And I wanted to look for a water proof pouch to put the car key in when I am on the water (hopefully not in the water) on my surfski. Back in the car and off to St Francis. Our first stop was the surf shop. No joy. 2 doors further another surf shop. Also no joy, but Michaela behind the counter could probably source one. Hold whilst she phoned the Vape shop. Maybe I have not smoked enough, but I did not make the connection between a Vape shop and a surf shop. Now that I am typing I make the connection... surfers like to enjoy life...surfing, vaping, chickies... a complete package. Then again, perhaps they do not share a connection, just that the owner owns both stores and perhaps others in the village of St Francis. Still no joy, but she is on it!

Across the parking lot to the "health store". Crickey here they also have some lovely things.  I like the term Natural more than the term Biological. In my mind Natural is as nature intended it. Biological somehow for me is when science gets involved and products are still tampered with in some way. Manipulated is the word. Perhaps it it just semantics, but I would go for Natural above Biological. They had several choices of cooking oil and we settled on Macadamian oil for frying things in a pan. Some deodorant with this goodness and that goodness in it. We will have some of that. While we were reading the deodorant ingredients I heard the shop lady tell someone at the counter that she would do well to buy a vegatarien pie without gluten. Sold! We would have 1 of those to add to our wraps this evening and my chicken.

The crew went back at it today fixing potholes. Keep up the good work men! I have just taken a photo of part of the newly repaired road and see the old repairs which I had not seen before at I guess my attention was on how not to drive over the existing potholes. They are finished with this street now. 2 full days with a crew of approx 8 men. I said to Ingrid that they could probaby tar the whole road in a morning in Holland, but we are not living in Holland.

Pothole city

Cool. "This is Africa", I can say to Ingrid about a few obeservations that she makes. How many times have I heard, "Jij bent nu eenmaal in Nederland. Pas je aan!" (translated crudely... this is the way things are done in Holland. Adapt and accept). Coming from a country where everything is so structured, it is interesting to see that things still "work" here although the "rules" are sometimes stretched or altered for convenience. Cows walking in the street. This is Africa. Cyclists on a footpath or walkers on the cycle path, when they are cleary marked Cycle or Pedestrian.

Time to load the surfski onto the roof for another round into the wind and back again. Into the wind is practically straight out to sea. Once again getting through the surf was not difficult, but it was not easy. Some timing issues on whether to stay and hold, or go for it, but nothing major. This time I had the gopro strappped to my chest and not on the front of the surfski. I do not know, but probably did a few circuits of approx a kilometer out and back. Once again got a few lovely runs on the homeward journey. Ingrid had decided to walk form Jackpot to main beach where I was.

Our timing was pretty good as when I thought that I had had enough she was probably only about 200m away. I beached the surfski nicely and told here that the water was lovely. She looked pretty hot and bothered so I thought that it would be good to cool off a bit. She had her bikini top on and some shorts, so I said lets go in. She said that she did not have her bikini bottom on, but did have it with her. I told her that she could change in the life guard tower as there was nobody there. Actually there was nobody else on the beach, just us. I was once again pleasantly surprised that she did.

1,2,3, under and she was fully submerged. I still can not get over that contented smile that she eludes. I would call that happiness! Happiness from the core. She loves the sea! ??? Ingrid says that she feels like the sea is a healer and I can wholeheartedly agree. I feel like I am literally home when I am in the sea. If only I could breathe underwater like that guy on the TV programme, The man from Atlantis. Next thing I know she is standing in the position that I had taught her to catch a wave using only her body. Damn. You go girl! We caught a few waves together and although we never won King of the Beach, a game we play as brothers or with friends to body surf the furtherest to the beach, I was in awe of my wifes courage to try.

Whilst we were drying ourselves off an elderly couple had placed their towels on the beach and were setting off on a walk. Their path would come quite close by us and as it is Africa either 1 or the other party opened the conversation as if we knew eachother. "How is the water?" he asked. Just lovely we replied and before you knew it we were chatting to them for about a half an hour. He asked me what the surfski was and said that he would be interested to see me go out through the break (waves). No worries, I picked up the surfski and made my way out through the break and a little out to sea. On the homeward journey I was bowled over by the broken wave coming from the right, but no worries, I got this. I had to position the surfski with the pointy end out to sea as a set was just rolling in (Set = a larger that usually set of waves, usually 3 in a row) 1,2,3 and up and onto the surfski and off beachbound.

What a nice chat and how nice to hear a bit of their life story. Old people like to tell of what they have done. Turns out that the Old man is the father of somebody who lives next door to someone that we know. Small world isn't it?

By the time that we went home, the wind had died and all of a sudden the sun was gone and a mist has enveloped the sea. I can now imagine that people might say that they were surprised by a weather change. It seemed to happen in seconds. The view at the front of the house is misty, but the back of the house is clear, but overcast. Perhaps something to do with the changing of wind direction.

No fixed plans for tomorrow yet. Perhaps a game farm. We will decide tomorrow.
