Another peach.

3 april 2024 - Cape St. Francis, Zuid-Afrika

Another morning in our resort. Jackpot serves us well. Coffee for me and Ingrid did a little sleeping in. Not too much and she was up way before her Pilates class at 08h30. When she was at Pialtes I got a visitor, the garden boy. He comes usually on Wednesdays which is the day that we put out our trash. I gave Jacuzzi  (names and places have been changed to protect the innocent) the garage door key and opend the loft room for him.

Really there is not much for the poor man to do. Mow the lawn, but that is a job that I can do and do a bit of weeding. I had to sort of make up something else for him to do. The last time he did a piece of the decking and I thought perhaps we would do the front deck this time Not a lot to do, but it was something other than doing the lawn.

When Ingrid came back she told me that the Pilates teacher had let someone else do todays lesson as she had another engagement. Ingrid said that the "new" teacher did more stretching than the other lady and she finds that better suits her body. A workout and stretching seems to resonate with her, not that she minds the other teachers lessons.

Jacuzzi was by now finished with the deck in the front of Jackpot and was mowing the lawn. I made him some breakfast and we got ready for the beach. It was a peach of a day and we must make hay whilst the sun shines. Brolly (Bronwyn) in the car and after changing into our swim suits Dusty took us off to the beach. Nameless had been strapped to the roof and I was sure that I would make good use of it in the westerly wind which usually delivers a better wave. Jacuzzi was going to leave the keys under the mat at the front door (Jokes!)

We got to the beach and there were quite a few people on the beach enjoying the sun and sea. I took Nameless out to the backline after setting Bronwyn up in the sand. The waves were once again perfect for Nameless and I thoroughly enjoyed my session catching waves and paddling back out to the line up. I asked some kids why they were not at school. Holidays. Apparently 4 weeks free for the youth. That explains the amount of people on the beach this morning.

After my surf, I sat with Ingrid on the beach and watched the comings and goings. Our attention was taken by a toddler who had seemingly just learned to walk and she was sort of dancing over the sand as her balance was not yet perfect. Too cute for words. We saw some good surfing and some guys taking a beating as they had not timed their waves properly. I have to admit that I got caught out once and now sport a lovely bruise on my right bicep from an incorrectly timed take off. Thankfully I have a leash on the board and some handles to hold on to. Not much to write home about. Turn around and try again.

We spent about 45 mintues under Bronwyn or lying in the sun for limited times and then I went for my 1 wave wonder and Ingrid went for a dip in the ocean. I feel quite comfortable leaving her alone as she had come from far and has a good idea of the do's and don'ts. What a nice last wave. Biggest of the day, but like fisherman I may not be telling the whole truth. It did feel like it though. Perfect waves and Nameless handled it like a pro. One would be mistaken to think that she was only a week old so would not be up to the task.

Home Jerome for that shower to wash off the salt and a cup of tea. Later we took the trip into the Village for a few groceries. I was specifically looking for those tooth cleaning brushes, but they did not have any at the local supermarket. Tomorrow we will head into PE and they will be at the local chemist (drugstore).,Dischem or Clicks. Ingrid wanted Pizza for dinner, but we were not able to score. She always has a broccoli based pizza with mushrooms and cheese at home. I have had some myself and it is pretty damn good. We settled for vegatarian spring rolls at another bakery. Not Baker Barry.

We had picked up a hitchhiker on our way to the Village, something we sometimes do when the gut feeling it feeling it. Quite often we do not pick up hitchhikers. She asked us to drop her at the Building supply store which is next to the township and that prompted me to drive to Granny's pools for a cup of coffee. I wil reiterate that the day is perfect weather wise. We sat and drank our coffee and just lapped up the beaty of the day. Pristine green and blue water and sun and clear blue skies. We sat for quite a while and decided to order a bite to eat and another coffee. We had lucked in as they had closed, but as we were already sitting customers so I guess they thought, all good. 2pm closing time. Sounds like my kind of a work day.

Back home I went upstairs for the afternooner and was sleeping in a few seconds. Once again when I arose and came down the stairs Ingrid was on the cough with her sleepy eye. She was reading her book and is near the end. We had a cup of tea and I puzzled a bit of the new puzzle and did my 5 pieces before I stopped. It was almost time for the Wednsesday Time Trial on the canals in the Village and I still had to put the surfski on the roof and tie it down.

The time trial is my favourite non favourite. After about 1.5km I feel like giving up, but somehow I find excuses to continue. Mind games! Today's excuse was that I had 2 paddlers in my slip stream, making it easier for them, but I was doing most of the work. They estimate a 7-14% energy saving in the slip stream. Today one of the guys took a turn and he pulled me through kilometer 2. I then took over the lead and I felt like we were acing it together. Around the 4.5km mark at the last turn the 2 increased ther cadence and got a few seconds ahead. I was slightly disappointed at my time as I was over a minute slower than last week and I felt like we had done well today. It was the tide someone said and I guess I can not change the result, but I feel like probaly could have done more, but no use killing myself for a feew seconds gain. I was satisfied.

During the last kilomter the mist began to set in and once I had my surfski on the roof it was really rather eerie. Dusty, lights on and be careful please. I was pleased to get home and put the surfski in the garage, had a shower and we made some dinner. Tomorow is another day. We have plans.
