Letting Mother out.

11 april 2024 - Patensie, Zuid-Afrika

Up in the morning and off to school. Today was going to be the first day that the sun would probably push it's way through the clouds in a few days. Nothing other than to have sat out this one. That is life I suppose. Some days are sunshine and some are rain.

It was not blue skies and warm sunshine, but the rain Gods probably had no more in reserve to throw at us. Ingrid and I went for a walk on the wild side. Into the medium chill and wind on the way there and we would have the wind in out back on the homeward journey. We passed a log (driftwood tree trunk) on the way there and the artwork done by previous walkers had been undone by the wine. People pile shells on the log in long line down the trunk. All the shells were on the leeward side of the trunk. Ingrid began with the restore process and I am guessing that others will finish the job. I suppose a return trip is advised before we leave to check on the progress.

After our walk it was coffee time at Costal Collective. Ingrid went to the toilet and I was supposed to order the coffees. I saw Baker Barry sitting all lonesome at a table as I was walking to the counter to order and said hello. One thing led to another and I was sitting at Barry's table before I knew it and had not yet ordered the coffees by the time Ingrid had returned from the toilet. Mmm, you order babe. I got to chatting to baker Barry and our coffees arrived. While we were drinking and chatting about how Baker Barry had gotten into the business and production and interestign things Barry's breakfast arrived and he ate and we drank and talked. I guess that is the word. We talked, not chatted.

Back at Jackpot Mom was awake and sitting with her coffee. The day was beginning to look like it would turn out nicely. Ingrid and I sat outside on her favourite stair on the deck and I asked what she thought that we should do to fill up some time today. She said that she had an idea, but I would probably not like it. Spit it out! We should perhaps take the drive to Patensie and that lovely road restaurant (Padstal) where we had been last week.

Not an idea that would have come into my head, but what else were we going to do today. Mom only had to take off her gown as she was already dressed. Ingrid looked very beautiful in her new outfit that she bought yesterday. Dusty take us to Patensie. The drive really is lovely and although it had only rained for 2 days straight one could notice the change in the greenness (looks funny but is the correct spelling) in the landscape. Once again we had a lovely drive to the restaurant and Mom was impressed with the pure scale of the citrus trees lining the sides of the valleys.

At Padlangs (the restaurant) we moved a table into the sun. More accurately, we moved it out of the shade. The sun was trying to peek between the clouds. Our view from the tabel along the valley and far to the other side was wonderful. Funny that on the other side of the valley the sun was shining brightly, but we were fighting for the occasional ray. It was not cold, but it could have been warmer.  Our meals we chose to perfection once again. Ingrid and I decided to share 2 meals half half and Mom just had a dessert. Malva pudding and icecream. I tried the Kafir Ginger beer and it was very nice. As per the agreement Ingrid and I ate half of our meal and then swapped plates.

I was still eating my half of Ingrid's meal and she took Moms plate as Granny could not finish 2 Malves puddings and 2 scoops of ice cream. I was enjoying my bean soup and the next minute I realised that Ingrid was about to put the last spoonful of the dessert into her mouth. THANK YOU for saving me some....!!! Snooze you loose. No Malva pudding for me. I would have to make do with a fresh cup of black gold, that Americano (Africano) coffee. It was a lovely meal in a lovely setting. Thanks for the suggestion Ingrid. They have a little goodie shop and we puchased 2 bottles of the Kefir Ginger Beer for at home. She also purchased 2 enamel coffee mugs.

On the way home Mom once again thanked us for the trip as like us she was unfamiliar with the part of our country, although it is almost a stones throw away (50km). On the way home we stopped in at the Village supermarket for supplies for dinner. What did I find in the fridges when going to get some sprakling water. Exactly... they were on special! No, not exactly just that. There right next to the sparkling water that was on special was a 2l bottle of Kafir Ginger Beer. Exactly that same brand that we had bought at Padlangs!

Home for that afternooner and I had a mailbu board session in mind for the late afternoon. The waves are pumping (big mothers) and I wanted a piece of the action. Ingrid came with me to the beach and we sat and watched for a bit. Although the waves were big, the inside break was really a mixed box of tricks. The waves were not breaking consistently from 1 place and one can not explain it better than it was messy. The break out along the point was really looking nice, but it is not a break to take the malibu board to. Too close to the rocks. and a little error would most likely put a little hole in the board.

No throwing caution to the wind today. I was extremely tempted, but decided to keep things whole, man and board. We took a walk along the beach at the high tide mare. About half way down the beach I stopped Ingrid and told her to look at the size of the set waves crashing down. Impressive with extremely thick lips that you say Sir to! The set waves crashed down out at the back and we wlaked a little further.

RUN!!! The set waves had reached the beach and it was sort of running away from a Tsunami! The waves were chasing us up the beach and we were in a flat our run not to get caught (The Tsunami was only 5cm high). What a laugh we had! Back at the car we ran (LOL - we were walking again by this time) into Father in law in law who had come to the beach to check on it out. No luck for him. I was not going to go out in this mess.

At home I showered and got into my pyjamas. Mom and Ingrid installed themselves in front of the TV and i took to the laptop to find a film to watch. Some silly boy's movie with shooting and stuff.

Mom is now starting to gather some things for tomorrow. She is planning on going to visit some of her friends on the way back home for the weekend.

We have some plans for next week. Watch this space.
