Safari

18 april 2024 - Addo, Zuid-Afrika

Tuesday was a full day at Safari land. It really is our guilty pleasure! Out in the middle of nowhere with no mobile signal except wifi in the main building of the lodge. We guess that the world could miss us for 2 days, so we treat that as a break also from social media and 'playing'on our phones. We just check for messages from family really.

Morning is up with the sparrows and after a quick cup of delicious coffee we climb into the safari jeep (Toyota) and spend 3 hours or so with Ranger Bob who drives us around the reserve looking for the animals. The reserve has grown over the years and finding the animals is not a sure thing. Sometimes you run into them left right and centre and othertimes one drives around Beautifuland do not see a lot remarkable. Actually anything one sees is remarkable, but they have coined the Big 5 and at the end of our stay we always see the Big 4.5. The Leopard we have never seen in this reserve and we have substituted the Cheetah as the 0.5.

Highlight of this day was the Cheetah mom and her 4 cubs lying ontop and entwinded with eachother. What a lovely playful scene and we could have watched for many hours. Beautiful animals they are. Animals, a coffee and snack stop and we arrived back at the lodge for breakfast which is extensive. Some more of that coffee for me please!

After breakfast we went to the pool and Ingrid and I were the only ones there along with 2 hippo's who had taken refuge from the harsh African sun this morning. Wonderful. After lunch is was back to lazing and then it was time for the game drive and after that dinner. Days like this are so special in a totally different way to other days in Africa. It is dangerous and chaotic in Africa inside the parks and outside.

Yesterday after our morning game drive we got reunited with Dusty and took the correct road back to PE (Gqeberha - name change, but this one I knew). We arrived at brothers house in PE to baby sit their dog. They are away for 2 days to nieces graduation. Clever kid! Doggy goes almost everywhere with brother, but 6 hours to Bloemfontein and back the next day would be a bit much for poochie. Solved a problem for both sides. This way we had a place to stay nearer to our weekend destination and would not involve a trip back to Jackpot and then back to PE today to celebrate my Dad birthday (81) and then back to Jackpot tonight and then back to weekend destination on Friday. Long story short, we slept in PE last night and doggy slept on the bed with us. Perhaps dog slept and we were on the bed with it.

Ah, yes, a couple of days in a game reserve like that is so special. And it sounds (no complaints!) as if the weather was perfect too.
